Camps Bay, South Africa 2019
Situated in picturesque Camps Bay, South Africa, this contemporary home was designed to maximise the breath taking 360-degree views of the beach, ocean, and surrounding mountains.
The project is situated in picturesque Camps Bay, South Africa, and is magnificently located on the Atlantic Seaboard, at the foot of the Twelve Apostles mountain range and adjacent to Table Mountain. Nestled on a sloping site this contemporary home was designed to maximise the breath taking 360-degree views of the beach, ocean, and surrounding mountains.
Challenged with an extremely steep site, the concept was to arrange a series of bold interlocking forms to create protected and private spaces within and around the home. The development of a clear and simple diagram at the initiation of the project enabled the design to evolve an open, free flowing plan that maintained defined thresholds between private and communal space. A movement axis from east to west was established, drawing visitors into home and down through a dramatic volume to the communal heart of the home. Perpendicular wings at either end of this axis partially enclose a central garden, private and protected from the elements. The central garden, visible from all the rooms in the house, creates a feeling of interior-exterior ambiguity.
So much so that surrounding living spaces feel like outdoor spaces. The top and bottom levels are given over to bedrooms and private functions, with the intermediate level forming the expansive communal and entertainment area of the home. This communal area features an open plan kitchen, dining and living room, all with magnificent views over the swimming pool terrace, pool and ocean afar.
Favouring minimal, bold architectural gestures at the behest of the client – we pursued a pared back material palette that would complement this architectural direction. Dark grey zinc cladding, plain white walls and timber cladding contrast to create a sophisticated and intriguing palette externally. Internally, a light and serene atmosphere prevails, with plain white walls and ceilings, blond oak flooring and light grey aluminium defining the palette.
